Savannah!

After five months of midnight wakings, graveyard-shift feedings, and daily tantrums from our otherwise cute children, we decided that we needed to go someplace far, far away. We chose Savannah, Georgia. It sounded like a calm, relaxing place in Gone with the Wind, according to Miss Scarlet O'Hara. She said that Savannah and Charleston were "like aged grandmothers fanning themselves placidly in the sun."

We felt kind of elderly by that point, so Savannah sounded perfect. Above is a picture of Forsyth Park, which was right across the street from our hotel. This picture doesn't quite capture how stunning it was.

We brought the easiest of our three children with us, and he loved having all the attention to himself for once. He charmed everyone we met. He allowed us to go on tours and to eat leisurely dinners in restaurants, except for one night when I got sick and Oliver went to eat by himself at a fancy restaurant where he had ordered a bouquet of flowers to be laid on the table.

Here's the Mercer House, the famous setting for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. This house was almost torn down and made into a gas station several decades ago, but then a few town activitists bought it and sold it to someone who vowed to restore it. The buyer later shot someone in this house, and the book deals with his trial.

Here's the Sorrel-Weed house, the most haunted house in all of Savannah! That's really saying something, since ghost tours seem to be one of the main drivers of the local economy.

That's funny. I could have sworn there were three people in this picture when I took it.

We're so glad that they could watch them, and also glad for the amazing hotel that ZZ an PZ booked for us with their points. It takes a village to free us up to go on a vacation!
